The piece was composed from July to October, 1928. It is devoted to the dancer Ida Rubinstein. In 1927, she asked Maurice Ravel to composed a spanish ballet. A first Ravel planned to re-arrange some pieces from Ibéria von Isaac Albéniz for orchestra. As the transcription rights were already transferred to Enrique Fernández Arbós, Ravel decided to create a unique composition. "A dance of a single movement in a very slow melody and harmony. The only instrument of change was the loudness".
