This arrangement of 'Gloria' is based on the old French Christmas song 'Les Anges dans nos campagnes', known in the English speaking world as ' Angels We've Heard on High'. The text speaks of the moment when angels announce the birth of Jesus Christ through song and praise. The refrain 'Gloria in excelsis deo' is Latin for "Glory to God in the higest.'

This new (2018) arrangement for saxophone quartet by Bernd Frank is set in a classic four voice choral style. It begins simply following the introduction and develops harmonically throughout the work. The second half following letter D may be played slightly quicker if desired.Part F should be thought of as the coda/finale. Here some motifs return in counterpoint and it concludes with a bright major final cadence. The main theme has been arranged in duet-like eighths as question and answer phrases In the introduction and transition. The endings of both of these parts should be played clearly (in octaves).

This arrangement is quite celebratory and therefore suitable for every Christmas time concert as well as for church services.

This flexible arrangement may be played with different saxophone instrumentations, also without baritone as three of the four voices offer various possibilities.
